About University of Missouri-St. Louis

The University of Missouri–St. Louis, or UMSL for short, is a public research university located in St. Louis, which is an independent city in the state of Missouri, USA, with a population approximated at a number of more than 300 000 inhabitants. St. Louis is the principal municipality of Greater St. Louis, which is the 16th largest urban area in the country, as well as the largest one in the state, having more than 2 800 000 people, living within its limits.

UMSL was established in 1960, as Normandy Residence Center, its current name being adopted 3 years later, and it is the newest university in the UM System. It is the largest university by enrollment in the St. Louis area, having more than 15 000 students attending it, and according to U.S. News & World Reports' America's Best Graduate Schools (2009), its doctoral degree program in Criminology & Criminal Justice is 4th in the country.

In addition to the doctoral degree program in Criminology & Criminal Justice degree program, the university offers many other educational programs, in various fields of study, including the International Business Undergraduate program, which was placed on the 15th place, by U.S. News & World Reports, in 2010.

Athletics

UMSL's athletic teams are known as the UMSL Tritons, who compete in 11 sports, for both men and women, in NCAA Division II, including in soccer, baseball, golf and softball. Their distinctive colors are red and gold.
